The Giants go 3 - 4 in week one

Giant's sluggers off to a slow start

The TBL kicked off it's premier season on April 6, 1998. The Giants started the season off with a win in extra innings. Closer Mike Myers got the win in a close eleven inning game. The Giants went on to win two more games while losing four. Manager Chad Bragg said "we are glad that the fist week is behind us, and we know that once our sluggers get their routines down we'll pick up the pace." Veteran Shawon Dunston was a big help in the Giant's three wins. Dunston stacked up a batting average of .417 this week with an RBI. "Our pithcing was a little sluggish this week and Kevin Foster had a very bad game on Saturday and Frymann and Rivera's injuries won't help us next week.. Foster will surely come around as the year goes on. Next week we will face San Diego, who gave us three of our four losses this week, Colorado, and Pittsburgh. The first week of the TBL was a very big dissapointment for Giant fans. Most fans were looking forward to seeing a fireworks display of hitting from Belle, Karros and Frymann. The three players combined for a total of three homers, two of which were by 3rd baseman Travis Frymann who recieved a broken nose in Saturday's game. Belle batted just .192 for the week, and Karros batted a mere .179. Frymann batted a .208 with his broken nose. Manager Chad Bragg says he is sure the bats will heat up as the season goes on. We certainly hope so Coach Bragg.

Injuries could hurt Giants

Some stats from week one

3rd Baseman Travis Fryman broke his nose during Saturday's game and says he will be playing at about 80% for the next few days. Coach Chad Bragg says that he will continue to play Fryman because his bat is desperately needed. Also injured in the opening week of the TBL, was centerfielder Ruben Rivera. Rivera was 2 for 5 on opening day and recieved a stress fracture to the ulna on Wednesday. The Giants starting centerfielder will probably be out for up to six weeks. Rivera will begin rehab as soon as possible and hopes to come back as early as the team doctor will allow him.
